Our Think Green! Campaign focuses on four key areas:
· Energy conservation
· Waste reduction & recycling
· Interior Environment (acquisition/disposal policies)
· Staff/Client Awareness
What we are doing now!
- Working with the Saskatchewan Research Council on an Energy Audit and prioritizing future initiatives to reduce consumption.
- Planning our energy saving priorities based on information from an energy audit conducted by the Saskatchewan Research Council in September 2008.
- Working on maximizing what we divert from the landfill, to improve on the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council waste audit conducted in October 2008.
- Undertaking a waste audit to establish baselines for measurements.
- Installing variable frequency drives in the replacement of air handling units.
- Changing fluorescent bulbs from T-12 to T-8
- Office equipment is programmed in sleep mode when not in use.
- Installing occupancy sensors in washrooms and storage rooms.
- Changing cooking practices (cook with lids on pots, turn off ovens when not in use, etc.).
- Implementing our “Lights Out” campaign.
- Hosting “Zero Waste” events to reduce the impact in landfills.
- Emailing documents and referring clients to our website resources.
- Recycling paper, cans & glass bottles.
- Printing & copying 2-sided documents.
- Using china, glassware and stainless flatware is our standard practice.
- Using linens to dress our tables.
- Providing juice and water in bulk containers.
- Serving “Fair Trade” coffee & tea.
- Avoiding pre-filling water glasses.
- Our centralized location in the heart of downtown Saskatoon provides easy access by mass transit, or, bicycle.
- Integrating natural daylight to the greatest degree possible in our new convention space.
- Unused chemicals and paints are disposed of at approved locations.
- 90% of our washrooms have been fitted with water saving fixtures.
- We’ve established an Environmental Action Team which meets bi-monthly to review practices, recommend improvements and implement changes.
- Developing partnerships with environmental organizations.
