About Saskatoon
Centrally located in the heart of the province, Saskatoon is Saskatchewan’s largest city with a population over 235,000 and growing. The city is situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan river which is crossed by seven bridges within the city limits hence the nickname “Bridge City”.
The Saskatoon area has been inhabited for 6,000 years; however it was not until the summer of 1883 that the first settlers began to arrive and the town charter was obtained in 1903. The name “Saskatoon” is derived from ‘mis-sask-quah-toomina’, which is the Cree Indian name for a local indigenous berry.
Saskatoon is noted as one of Canada’s sunniest cities receiving an average of 2,381 hours of sunshine annually. It is a four-season destination with much to offer visitors. The city is host to a wide range of world-class festivals, exhibitions, concert performances and sporting events.
There are diverse opportunities for recreation with the abundance of leisure facilities, parks, golf courses, art galleries, heritage sites, museums, theatre companies and symphony.
